Spacewalkers Garrett Reisman and Stephen Bowen are back inside the U.S. Quest airlock at the International Space Station, having just completed the first of three spacewalks planned during shuttle Atlantis' final scheduled flight.
The two Atlantis mission specialists went into overtime to finish a busy excursion that included the delivery and installation of an extra U.S. communications antenna and a new work platform for the station's two-armed Canadian android Dextre. The astronauts also loosened bolts on batteries that will be replaced during two more outings this week.
The spacewalk lasted 7 hours and 25 minutes. That brought the total amount of time spent in the assembly and maintenance of the International Space Station to 900 hours and 58 minutes.
