Hillary weighs in on space exploration

Marking the 50th anniversary of the launch of Russia's Sputnik, Democrat presidential candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton rolled out her science and space agenda today.

In a news release posted at hillaryclinton.com, Clinton vowed to end the Bush Administration's "war on science" and announced an agenda that would "promote scientific discovery in research, medicine and space exploration."

"For six and half years under this president, it's been open season on open inquiry. And by ignoring or manipulating science, the Bush administration is letting our economic competitors get an edge in the global economy," Clinton said.

"I believe we have to change course -- and I know America is ready. What America achieved after Sputnik is a symbol of what America can do now as we confront a new global economy, new environmental challenges, and the promise of new discoveries in medicine. America led in the 20th century -- and with new policies and a renewed commitment to scientific integrity and innovation, America is ready to lead in the 21st."

You can check out the release in its entirety here: Hillary on Science.

Here is a cut-and-paste excerpt that detail the candidate's position on space exploration:

"Enhancing American Leadership in Space

Pursue an Ambitious 21st century Space Exploration Program. Hillary is committed to a space exploration program that involves robust human spaceflight to complete the Space Station and later human missions, expanded robotic spaceflight probes of our solar system leading to future human exploration, and enhanced space science activities. She will speed development, testing, and deployment of next-generation launch and crew exploration vehicles to replace the aging Space Shuttle. And in pursuing next-generation programs, Hillary will capitalize on the expertise of the current Shuttle program workforce and will not allow a repeat of the "brain drain" that occurred between the Apollo and shuttle missions.

Develop a comprehensive space-based Earth Sciences agenda. A National Academy of Sciences report found that "[a]t a time of unprecedented need, the nation's Earth observation satellite programs, once the envy of the world, are in disarray." (NAS final report of the Decadal Survey Panel, [January 2007].) Incredibly, the number of operating sensors and instruments on NASA satellites that observe the Earth is likely to drop by 35 percent by 2010 and 50 percent by 2015. Among other things, NASA's Earth Sciences program is vital to our country's -- and the world's -- long-term efforts to confront climate change. Hillary will fully fund NASA's Earth Sciences program and initiate a Space-based Climate Change Initiative to help us secure the scientific knowledge we need to combat global warming and to prepare for extreme climate events.

Shore up American leadership in aeronautics. At the beginning of this year, President Bush requested roughly $554 million for NASA's aeronautics research budget, down from more than $1 billion in 2004. The United States has enjoyed a positive trade balance in aeronautics and aerospace technologies that runs into the tens of billions, even as we've faced a growing overall trade deficit. To address the twin challenges of a declining skilled aeronautics workforce and increasing global competition in aeronautics, Hillary will make the financial investments in research and development necessary to shore up and expand our competitive edge. She will also work in partnership with industry to build technologies and capabilities that yield benefits far beyond aerospace."

We'll be happy to post any press release or white papers that outline the positions of any candidate on space exploration. Your comments also are welcome below.

This brings tears to my eyes, just a few years ago the "Clintons" cared less for the miltary or Space programs.
Now she needs the "Florida Votes" we are on her screen for money she is with us.
We will get moneys right after healhcare and welfair reform.
She is not going to make the mistake Gore and kerry made
we are on her screen for now.
This only be until after the election she was for the war just after she was not

I just found my next presidential selection.

She is much more pro-human space flight than I would have guessed and more than most democrats. Hopefully it holds if she gets elected.

Anonymous said...

Who said Democrats aren't in favor of man flight or the entire peaceful space program, Rush Limbaugh? Think back, it was a Democrat that started the program.

Anonymous said...

Labor needs a democratic president. If your job involves sweating, you should seriously look to the democratic party.

Anonymous said...

You've got to be joking. Sweating equates to voting Democratic? You DO need to be replaced. Get a grip on this fact, you are not coming back.

Anonymous said...

I am changing parties, I will never vote for another Republican nor Bill Nelson. He has his hands in USA's pockets big time. Hill might be the one.

Anonymous said...

I might vote Dem, but I know it won't be for Hillary. She is a scary lady and puts on whatever political face that will get the vote.

The replacement workers we've seen for the last couple of months have given USA reason not to end the strike. They are working very hard and are not just doing what is acceptable to get by. They have got us way ahead on several projects. I hope they get to stay.

Anonymous said...

Just look what the Clinton's did for the Chinese space program!

Anonymous said...

Look at her record. She flip flops on everything. I will not trust anything she says.

Anonymous said...

I think 2:32 meant to say:

Labor needs a democratic president. If your life involves striking, you should seriously look to the democratic party.

No, it was a Republican who signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act into law, not a Democrat. And before you trot out the crap that Eisenhower was asleep at the switch and it took Kennedy's administration to make things start happening, read McDougall's "The Heavens & the Earth." Larger geopolitical realities shaped early policy (especially the question of the legality of satellite overflight of foreign territory), and most importantly Eisenhower feared what a bloated US govt space program might end up becoming...and guess what? He was DEAD ON.

As for Ms. Rodham-Clinton's offered space policy, it sounds remarkably familiar: the first portion is nearly identical to her husband's (and Mr. Gore's) pre-election suggested policy (which translated into nothing more than the status quo (and, later, that great money-saving scheme (sic) of joining with the Russians on ISS), again dressed up in the latest griping (and woefully one-sided) headlines to ensure support from those disaffected by current budget realities.

Let's be honest, folks. Only ONE Democratic president EVER expanded the US space program, and that was (in part) to move the Bay of Pigs, Gagarin's flight, and bad events in southeast Asia out of the headlines (Oval Office recordings even document how little JFK cared about the program). All the others since then (beginning with Mr. Carter) have subscribed to the smallest possible space program they felt they could get away with (since space workers do vote, of course).
While the road has been rocky and Congress (and OMB, and even NASA itself) have done their part to muck the programs up (mostly by forcing NASA to be penny-wise and pound-foolish), it was a Republican president who approved the shuttle (Nixon), proposed/
approved the station (Reagan), proposed the Space Exploration Initiative (George HW Bush-NASA killed this one all by itself by bloating it out into unaffordability), and proposed/approved the VSE (George W. Bush).

So, if a growing space program is what you'd like to see, study the history--all of it--and think very carefully about your vote.

Sounds like we just found our first governor of the Moon. Dust off the Saturn V plans and we could easily launch her by election time. We have the technology...just do it!

This coming from the person responsible for not allowing military personnel on duty in the white house to wear their uniforms because she found it offensive and didn't want to acknowledge their presence. Yeah right....

Anonymous said...

This is all BS. She could care less about the space program or the US Military personnel.

Anonymous said...

President Nixon, a republican, ok'd the final space shuttle design.

Anonymous said...

Now how about that, the Seahag of the democrat socialist party salutes or should I say salyutes the space program with her own space cadet ideas.

Not on the day the first American satellite went into orbit(which by the way was Jan 31, 1958 for all you retarded out there)but on the day the communists launched theirs. What did little old Sputnik do? It beeped and beeped some more.
Explorer 1 the first US satellite, contained a cosmic ray detector, radio transmitter, and temperature and micrometeoroid sensors, oh and by the way it discovered the Van Allen Radiation Belts.

What a Seahag! Who remembers that Nikita Hhrushchev promised the United States that his missiles would rain down upon the us? Hmmmmm?

Putin is doing that aigain too

To the bright boy or girl who said that the democrats are for manned spaceflight and Rush said they weren't. Hey tard go check out the votes of the senate and house for the past 20 years and you'll see who was for what and who wasn't.
I'm amazed that you could even post to this blog.

ok, where is the web site where you got your information? I'm willing to take a look. "tard"? thats not very kind, does your mommy know that you are on the internet again?

Anonymous said...

The First manned space program was started by Ike.
Think who started the Space and put the funds into the program
JFK climed on the bad wagon then Johnson cut the program funding after we landed on the Moon.
Then Tricky funded the shuttle.
Carter did not do anything.
Ronald put a ton of money into Space and the sysstems.
Along came the "Clintons" who were against Miltary and the Space all for the social programs.

Getting past the usual political and union talking points that seem to dominate here lately...

This is a nothing comment. It's the kind of general, "I'm for motherhood and apple pie" comment any candidate can make (after their staff writes it for them) and which commits them to nothing. And I say that as a Democrat.

Let's be honest. None of the candidates care about spaceflight one way or the other, and their "policy" will be framed to do two things: Keep their campaign contributors happy, and attract voters in places like the Space Coast. Given a choice, the former of those two will come first.

Todd Halvorson said...

Hey Rich:

I think the fact that Hillary said she would speed up development of the Ares and Orion projects is significant. It's a much stronger lean toward human space flight than the Kerry-Edwards campaign had in 2004 -- especially given that Bush had just rolled out the VSE 10 months before the election.

It also shows that we on The Space Coast can leverage our position at the east end of the I-4 corridor, which will provide the key swing vote in both the 2008 and 2012 presidential elections. We should be pushing all the candidates to outpromise themselves in regard to their commitments to the space program. As a friend of mine says, The Keys To The Oval Office Are At KSC.

Space will never be a major presidential campaign issue for any candidate, ever, and even not in Florida. The demographics and pressing issues here would dictate that the Social Security system's impending collapse, health care, health insurance, catastrophe insurance, taxes and any number of other issues will always outweigh in most people's minds the importance of space exploration. No president's going to kill the space program or even substantially weaken, nor is any going to devote a ton of political time advancing a major space effort because it's not important enough in the grand scheme of daily life of most Americans to spend that much time on. Space is important, but it's not going to rise above those other issues in the minds of regular voters -- and therefore, presidential candidates would be foolish to say much more than the same answers we'll get from every single candidate. I support space and technology. Of course, they do. We spend very little on it. It gets them great publicity and public pride most of the time. It advances civilization. It's not controversial. The only people against are the ill-informed who for some reason still believe we're spending a ton of money on it. Anyway, the point being -- I wouldn't expect to see much excitement during the campaign about space exploration or anything with any more detail than this non-binding statement from Mrs. Clinton. I doubt most of the candidates will even know enough about what we all consider the important issues to even engage intelligently in a debate of what the policy ought to be. Once they are elected, they'll get the briefings necessary and folks in executive branch beyond the West Wing will give them advice on what to do. I think Bush felt strongly about space exploration in general, but I don't think he was the brainchild behind the current vision. It's called the president's vision, but it's really the vision of a select band of White House staffers and some insiders at NASA who put this thing together, laid it in front of a generally-supportive president at a key moment and got the go-ahead. That he gave a speech on it is indicative of his personal, general support for the idea of continued exploration. Every president -- every human being -- ought to be in favor of that. Anyone against exploring doesn't understand the nature of the human mind or spirit. Anyway, I'm glad she went on the record and I hope others do but don't look for inspiration on this issue from the candidates. And, I wouldn't make my vote based on what they say about space. Too many other issues outweigh in the grand scheme of things in our country today.

Anonymous said...

Listen here sport. It seems to me that over the years, all the people being sent out the gate for theft, drugs, alcohol, and general crime have been from the OSBs and the OPFs. The union seems to be just a bunch of honest blue collar workers looking to get a fair contract with the company.

We don't just simply wish to agree on our terms. We agreed to mediation. If you look at the company's offer at mediation and then take a look at the union's offer, you would find that the union was much closer to the original offer than the company. And we did not leave mediation. The company did. So it seems as though your arguement is hogwash.
It takes two to tango and the compny should not agree to mediation if they are not willing to come to mediation to listen as well as talk. This has turned into something personal for HR and they should be relieved of their duties because they cannot negotiate with a clear consience.

Okay Ace. Let's see if I can decipher what you are attempting to say. How about this. I'll answer and if you understand, then I'll know if I understood what you said.

When two are trying to tango(negotiate), and they are dancing to two different steps(contract offers aren't the same), then they go to dance school(mediation).

If the instructor(mediator) tries to teach you to dance together properly(mediates), and one of you can't take the time to stand there and listen(company) and leaves before the lesson is over(walks out on the mediator), then nobody is going to get anywhere(no resolution). The one who walked out(company) should not say that the other dancer(union) doesn't know how to dance(negotiate). Because the other dancer(union) came to learn from the instructor(mediator) how to dance(negotiate) with the other partner(company) and are willing to work with the other dancer(company) who left because he thinks he is the best dancer and nobody can teach them anything(can't take the time to listen as well as talk and negotiate in good faith).

Here endeth the lesson.

THE UNION DID NOT SAY I AM SORRY AND THE COMPANY REP LEFT THE DANCE HALL.
THE INSTRUCTOR WILL HAVE TO RESCHEDULE ANOTHER DANCE LESSON AND
INSTRUCT ON GOOD MANNERS WHILE DANCING.

Anonymous said...

Maybe the company rep shouldn't be so thin skinned when the union rep tells him his dancing stinks. Lord knows the union rep has heard it from the company rep. And the union rep never walked out on class. That is when, instead of walking out on dance class, the company rep should allow the dance instructor to show both sides proper edicate in dancing together and choosing kind words. However, the company rep's ego has been hurt and he took his dancing shoes and went home to mommy. But mommy has left because they won't let her drink at home. However, company rep now has a new mommy who might make him play nice and quit being a big baby. He will never learn to dance with anybody if he keeps getting his feelings hurt. Time to grow up and be a big boy. Play nice and all will be better for it.
