USA, union to open new negotiations

This just in from Florida Today Staff Writer Scott Blake:

The Machinists union at Kennedy Space Center and NASA space shuttle contractor United Space Alliance will return to contract negotiations Thursday in hopes of ending a more than three-month strike.

The two sides and a federal mediator have scheduled negotiating sessions for Thursday and Friday at an undisclosed location in Cape Canaveral, company and union officials said today.

"We're hopeful that we'll have a contract by Friday evening," said Lew Jamieson, president of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local 2061.

When asked if an agreement will be reached this week, United Space Alliance spokeswoman Tracy Yates said: "It's difficult to predict. Our goal is the same as it's always been...We have every intention of negotiating in good faith."

If an agreement is reached between the company and union representatives, the union's membership would need to vote to approve it before the strike would end, Jamieson said.

The union went on strike June 14 after the two sides failed to agree on a three-year deal. About 444 workers are on strike, and are continuing to picket in shifts at entrances to the space center.

I would just like to say that before this strike I thought I knew what the word "PRIDE" meant. I knew the definition, most people do, but there is a huge difference between knowing the words and feeling it in person. It happens every time I get out of my car at the picket line. A lot of the people I picket with are people I just met on the line. I have seen some of these people at work but never realized they were Union Sisters and Brothers. I now know them and consider them family.
96 long, hot days, picket lines that mostly run themselves, Sisters and Brothers doing what needs to be done without needing to be told why, or when, or where. Hard questions being asked, hard answers being given. Some members sharing concerns and problems, others helping create solutions and giving support. I have never been through anything like this before, but sometimes our fears are more easily conquered than we think. It has not been easier on some than others, some have made different choices on how to handle the strike.
To the 90+% of this union still standing on these picket lines, I say, “THANK YOU” for instilling a feeling inside me that will never die!!! “PRIDE”
I would also like to thank our Union Brothers and Sisters as well as this community for their support. We all appreciate the waves and horns, the donations of supplies and money. You are still about 97% support, with the other 3% that don’t care enough to know why we are there.

Having pride in moderation is fine, just remember that it is also one of the seven deadly sins.

There is a story on the main page about this. Why is this put in the Flame Trench as well. It is only to enflame people against one another and probably the only way FT can get hits on its website. Great job FT for keeping Central Florida hate up.

After months of enduring the ongoing dispute between USA and the Union one thing has become abundantly clear to me, that those who are not represented by any Union are running scared!!! These people and the company would like nothing better than to see all Unions @ KSC busted!! They are evidently afraid that when EOP comes they will no longer have any job and what better way to secure a job in the next program than not to have Unions so that they can secure work in other places. To these people I say GET A LIFE, stop your incessant whining about Unions and start brushing up on YOUR BURGER FLIPPING SKILLS!!! I do not wish any hardship upon these people, but after the occassional glimpse at this hate filled blog, I do think it will be quite comical to see these people out in the real world struggling to make a living.

Okay, so substitute humility for pride if that makes you any happier. I am in total agreement with the poster above. It has been a humbling experience (happy now), to be out on strike, standing for what I believe in and not putting down those that chose to do things differently. I have never questioned what others are doing with their income, but all you non-union people are so very interested in how we are making ends meet and wishing all the worst on us. Shame on you. We will be back and SOON! There is something to be said for every one who dared to step out of their comfort zone and walk this strike. Yeah, 4 or 5 of you call it stupidity, but we call it SOLIDARITY.

Lust Sloth Pride Greed Envy Wrath Gluttony are the Seven sins that you mentioned and guess what the Mother of all sins is?

GREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEED.

Enjoy your overtime. You tried to break this strike, unsucessfully. Enjoy the benefits that you now have. Do not steal from the company that hired you. Leave with what you came in with.
The strikers will be returning with their dignity intact, the resolve strengthened and their eyes to the future of the space program. We were and still are professionals at our jobs.

Even if they get the best ever contract, they're morons for walking out in a right to work state. Some bargaining tool.

Very strong rumor says 2 of them ain't coming back.Or better stated, the job won't be there for them. Maybe more. The Georgia Bulldog coffee thrower and a guy that works the North picket. That should put a little more money on the table perhaps. Or laying off the lowest seniority people after ratification. Either way, you still don't win nothing.

A lot of these seem to apply.

Pride
Excessive belief in one's own abilities. It has been called the sin from which all others arise. Pride is also known as Vanity.
(Self explanatory)

Envy
The desire for others' traits, status, abilities, or situation.
(The IAM's desire to have what everyone else has just because they have it.)

Gluttony
An inordinate desire to consume more than that which one requires.
(The majority of the union workers are paid a lot more than someone on the outside doing the same job. Just because you work at the space center dosen't mean you are entitled to anything more than you are worth.)

Lust is an inordinate craving for the pleasures of the body.
(I'll cut you all a break here.)

Anger
Manifested in the individual who spurns love and opts instead for fury. It is also known as Wrath.
(Why do so many USA union workers seem to think that USA management is out to get them at all costs? Where does that come from?)

Greed
The desire for material wealth or gain. It is also called Avarice or Covetousness.
(I'm not saying this applies to the individual but it most certainly applies to some members of the negotiating committee and many unions in general.)

Sloth
The avoidance of PHYSICAL or spiritual work.
(That one sounds familiar.)

Top Ten Reasons Why I Don't Want A Union

10. The union doesn't write my paycheck.

9. Unions would rather cause problems than work together.

8. Union scale means the best workers are carrying the worst.

7. The people who want a union really need one.

6. Too corrupt.

5. Too political, too liberal and too partisan.

4. Unions are only about power and money for the ones who run the union.

3. Unions are negative about everything but how great they are.

2. I like to work steady.

1. I've got too much self respect.

to be anti union is to be anti american it is the right of the worker to be in the union and to try to take that away is just another black eye for america so as we fall you can thank your self and when your kids ask what it was like to have med, vaca time, sick time, a good retirment, holliday pay, over time, 40 hour work, weekends you can say was is not worth having and you gave it away so the 1% can live well as long as i have it you dont need it your not as good as you think and your kids will suffer for it but we will try to keep it for them to enjoy since you dont care about them. WILL YOU GIVE IT ALL BACK IT WAS A UNION THAT GOT ALL THAT FOR YOU

Wow....gone for a week, same old rhetoric. Your right about one thing. You will not accept the same contract...and you will still be out on strike. You were wrong about a couple of noted items though...you folks flew to Houston and asked upper USA management to go back to the table. After your union folks had asked, USA agreed to talk to the mediator. USA didn't ask you to come back to the table so stop smoking that one to your fellow strikers.
Your 2nd assumption is that the company cannot continue without your expertise. Well, your half and half there, the company can continue and has, and any of your expertise they need htey will just bring in as replacements and have done so. So they have folks doing your jobs and are paying them your salaries, so I guess in essence, you have been replaced. For how long is up to you....but the word is on the cape grapevine, contract is same minus perks you would have gotten 90 days ago. So you have 2 choices, sign and come back to work, or begin to be systematically replaced....which by FLRB rules, can happen.

USA has proven beyond all doubt that they do not need to talk to the "IAM".
USA can perform with out this group with great perfromance.
There is no need for USA to offer anymore than has been offered.
The "IAM" can either buy the offer or find other employment.
The future well tell us the "IAM" had to let their pride at the gate.
USA is not interested in talking too the "IAM" a total waste of time.
The union is feeding its members a lot of rumors to keep their members at the gate.
IAM management knows they have no
power and is trying too save face at the members expense.

It may suprise the "IAM" but 80% of the employees do not have a union.
Most are paid better with better benefits and retirements and 401 accounts.
They are paid better because of their performance not because a union has to speak for them.
The lower skill levels require a union because of no skills too bargain with.

You have all these things because of us. The company gives you just a little bit more than us to appease you into not choosing to organize. They also do this to cause grief to us. We understand this and accept this. It is all part of doing business with USA. Don't worry about us. Keep to yourself and we will do the same. We do not need or ask for your support. But the problem is that you can't do that. It brings you great pleasure to see other suffer. Help sad.

As far as skills, you have been working to paper for years. All you need to know how to do is read. You do the exact same task day in and day out. We have to think on the fly. No paper tells us how to fix something that may be unique each time. The engineers ask us how to do the job and then write the paper to reflect what we tell them. How many monkeys does it really take to stick a tile to a flat piece of metal.

So mind your own business and we will do the same. God bless to all. Even you.

Walker and his "IAM"management team will rearrange the dollars in the contract to give the appearance they won but there will not be any improvement.
But overall there will not be any giving by "USA" management team will hold their ground they are in the drivers seat.
The "IAM" asked for the meeting not "USA" they are happy with the oucome.

It is with a heavy heart that I must report to you the plain and simple facts.

Fact 1: We picked a really stupid time to strike

Fact 2: USA knows they don't need us

Fact 3: Bill collectors can be a real B1tch

Fact 4: Any union member with half a brain will cross on Monday and end the pain.

Folks, we sat down across from the company today and they made us an offer we simply can not accept. Why can they do this? Because with their current performance THEY DON'T NEED ANY OF US!

We lost, and we're sorry.

>>> You want to call the union "thugs"?

Just to remind everyone, the unions that signed their agreements earlier on included "me too" clauses that state that whatever we negotiate, they will receive the same. If we were to accept the deplorable contract USA has offered, as is presented on the union blog right now, the others will receive the same cuts, along with the non-union represented.

Let's not forget what USA has already done to deceive NASA ......

"A couple of things I found in the NASA Award fee write-up,
In December 2006, after lengthy negotiations, a final draft of the Severance Policy for inclusion with the Human Capital Retention Advance Agreement (AA) was provided by USA for final validation. This version reflected a mutually agreed to payment mix of 10/8/8 weeks and other language regarding eligibility of severance benefits. The AA was signed by both parties, but it was subsequently discovered that the signed policy USA provided back to NASA for inclusion with the AA had been altered or was otherwise replaced with a document that looked identical. This document turned out to contain several key discrepancies in comparison to the original Severance Policy provided by USA for final review. Included in these discrepancies was the payment mix had changed from the original 10/8/8 payment mix, to a 10/10/6 arrangement. Another discrepancy was the omission of language regarding non-payment of severance for personnel who refuse to accept comparable positions within USA or member subcontractors in the event their job is abolished. Other omissions/changes to language were also identified after close examination.
Unfortunately, these deviations were not discovered until after the Severance Policy was released to the USA workforce. This lack of configuration management control is unacceptable and is a major concern to NASA. "

USA has offered the union a 10/10/20 severance setup. So in order to receive your full severance pay, the employee must execute a certification stating that he or she is not employed by a succeeding contractor or sub-contractor, or employed by NASA within 50 mile of present employer, and must show this cert after every 10/10/20 week period. So much for your company loyalty! Any word on EIP yet? Gee, I wonder why?

USA also made scabs sign agreements that made them leave the union as a condition of employment, also against the law....

Yellow dog contracts - Agreements signed by workers as a condition of employment in which they promise not to join or remain in a union. The National Labor Relations Act, the Norris-LaGuardia Act and the Railway Labor Act all prohibit them.

Always remember, what the company is trying to do to the union, will most definitely be done to the non-represented, which you'll have no recourse to debate. Hope you're prepared for a good mugging....!!! <<<

How is USA charging time with their technician work force absent? Are they charging engineering hours (a much higher rate) to the government while they are performing technician tasks? How about all the people working the tools cribs how are they charging the government for their time? Last time I checked computer staff made more than logistics folks.

Well it is pretty apparent that USA has no intentions of sweetening the deal. In fact it looks like the rug has been yanked out pretty hard.

Bottom line is downsizing will occur when the Shuttles get sent to museums. The OPF is full of workers that would like to continue working and USA knows that they can transfer many of these workers. This strike was horrible timing based on what is likely on the horizon.

It is also apparent that USA is going to have little or no involvement with the next vehicle if ATK gets their way. To counter the AKT onslaught, USA is trying to keep cost way down. In the engineering ranks they only hire entry level people at this point so they can keep that cost down. They stick it to those of us who are exempt by demanding that we work many hours of unpaid overtime and travel on our own time if we travel outside of normal work hours. They call it green time….I guess that means the company gets more greenbacks in the long run. And the travel policy really sucks too. They think they are doing you a favor.

Problem for the union and for the exempt people is the future is not clear. There may not be a USA in a few years. There will be jobs, but with which company? We are all at the mercy of this transition; including the top brass that is so desperately trying to drive down cost so they will not get booted to the street. It really boils down to a “take it or leave it” decision at this point.

It is not about people folks, it is about the bottom line. When I transitioned from USBI it was very apparent that this bright idea called USA did not give a tinkers damn about people. It was all about “window dressing”. It appears that even the mighty IAM will not leap that hurdle to their liking. Honestly I wish you would but the cards are stacked against you at this point.

The choice for everybody, union or non-union, seems to be shall I continue to work in this industry (company) as it is today or do I go work in another and get the hell out of this stress filled risky business.

I know some of you union folks will take issue with this and call it a negative post. It was not meant to be that at all.

Interesting, the non union folks are basically being threatened by the union folks due to all the hate talk on the strike lines....but the non-union folks don't have any thing to do with the negotiations. So I guess that means the union could be construed as a bunch of haters looking for a fight and don't care who they attack. Now talk about showing a bad side. Sure hope the union negotiating team and NASA read this post to see what most non-party folks will have to deal with every day if these folks ever do make it back inside the fence.
