Live: Crew all board, working checklists

All seven astronauts are now aboard the space shuttle Discovery, awaiting their ride to the International Space Station on a day when the weather and the vehicle seem to be cooperating.

The launch of the shuttle remains on track for 7:43 p.m. Earlier, clouds were thicker over the launch pad, but they are now thinning as predicted in the forecast. A minor technical problem was fixed by a red team rushed out to the launch pad.

And, a bat that has attached itself to the external tank is a non-issue. (Click here to see a bigger picture of the bat and more details in this earlier post).

The astronauts are doing communications checks with the Launch Control Center and going through their own pre-launch checklists.

Coming up at 5:30 p.m. in our live broadcast will be an interview with FLORIDA TODAY photographer Craig Bailey, who will be talking about how best to take a twilight picture of a launching space shuttle.

As a way to honor the brave bat, the folks who make the mission patches should include a small figure of a bat. what do you think?
