Kennedy Space Center workers are getting set to swing open the rotating gantry at launch pad 39A to reveal shuttle Atlantis. The retraction of the Rotating Service Structure is one of the last major milestones at the pad before preparations for fueling begin overnight.
You can watch the operation unfold live by clicking on the NASA TV box at right to launch a viewer. The process is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. and typically takes 45-60 minutes.
The 130-foot tall structure protects the shuttle during its month long stay at the pad leading up to launch. It also houses a room used to insert cargo into the shuttle's payload bay.
Atlantis and its crew of six are on schedule to blast off to the International Space Station at 2:20 p.m. Friday.
