Kosmas: President's Plan "Simply Unacceptable"

This just in from U.S. Rep. Suzanne Kosmas, D-New Smyrna Beach:

WASHINGTON: In response to statements made by Obama Administration officials about the future of NASA’s human spaceflight program, Congresswoman Suzanne Kosmas (FL-24) issued the following statement:

"Though we are still awaiting the full budget details scheduled to be released next week, I am deeply concerned by what Administration officials have said about the President's proposal for NASA. I agree with extending use of the International Space Station and I am a strong supporter of commercial spaceflight, but I do not think we can rely on commercial flights alone for access to space and the ISS. If we are not moving forward with a specific vision for a next generation vehicle, then we need to take steps to safely extend the Shuttle program in order to fully support the Space Station.

"I also firmly believe that a robust space exploration program is critical for our economy and for inspiring future generations to excel in science and technology for the 21st Century. The President's proposal would leave NASA with essentially no program and no timeline for exploration beyond Earth's orbit.

"The President pledged that he would minimize the spaceflight gap, but without a plan for exploration beyond research and development, he is threatening to turn the gap into an abyss with no end in sight. The Space Coast and communities across the country have been looking to the President for leadership and a bold vision for the future of space exploration, and after months of delays he seems to be falling short. It is simply unacceptable and I will fight back, along with my colleagues from both parties, to maintain a robust space program and to preserve as many Space Coast jobs as possible."

Our president is "simply unacceptable".

My 8 year old nephew has been into "rockets" for about three years now. I've been doing all I can to encourage his interest in space and NASA. I grew up with the Apollo missions and Shuttle flights, and I believe they represent the greatest technological achievement to date of mankind. I want my nephews and niece to grow up being awed by space the way I was.

Being an adult, I now also understand the incredible contributions NASA has made to our economy through direct use of technologies developed by and for NASA (and that would not have been paid for otherwise), and through spin-off products from those developments. Use a cell phone? Thank NASA. NASA's biggest problem is that they have no sense of public relations whatsoever. They needed to make the returns we were getting on our investment much more apparent.

Obama is a liar!!!!! I hope everyone that voted for him is happy.

>Obama is a liar!!!!! I hope everyone that voted for him is happy.

So were Bush and Cheney and they go us into TWO wars with them.

I love the fact that Kosmas just threw the head of her own party under a Space Coast Transit bus.

BE-BEEP!

Congress will more than likely kick 'em in the gnads over this.

ROFLMAO!

Kosmas must say this for her District. Posey will bloviate, but that's his whole schtick. Weldon is the last local Congressman to vote against his District on space - $1 billion cut in '95 and '96 - and those coming after learned from that.

The plan outlined inflicts no more pain on the Space Coast than was anticipated. It relies on commercial initiative and free-market innovation in place of NASA's dead hand to steer technology and enable the future.

The nation wins. Space exploration wins, especially with stronger focus on the scientific and less emphasis on the pointless manned-space plan Bush put forward (and then abandoned).

Who loses? The entrenched aerospace corporations, Lockheed-Marrtin and Boeing, who have less of a lock on future programs.

In all, a great plan. Space Coast space will be on much more solid ground and the part that has been in good shape all along, unmanned ELV launches, will be reenforced. West of Banana Creek, not so good. East side: all good.

Shut NASA down, Mr. President. No one outside of this sorry county cares!!!

Good for her. Mr O has already failed on so many levels it is mindboggeling but then his agenda is for government control. He makes no secret of that and his actions speak loudly. His "change" has made America weak, broke and may never recover. How can it with the deficit in the trillions and no plan to help the plight of small business who provide 70% of jobs. And the past and past administrations are not without blame. If you study the policies passed during both regimes it is obvious that out gov't has caused an economic disaster that may end up destroying us.

KOSMAS IS AT FAULT AND THIS IS RETALIATION FOR NOT SUPPORTING THE PRESIDENTS HEALTH CARE REFORM PLAN WITH THE PUBLIC OPTION.

I CALLED KOSMAS STATING THAT I HAD VOTED FOR HER BUT I THINK SHE IS A REPUBLICAN SPY AND WILL CAMPAIGN AGAINST HER.

The goal of terrorist is to bring down the U.S any way it can.

That is really hard work for the terrorist but since 9/11 the Republicans have been giving the terrorist a break and doing the job for them.

Republicans voted for Bush
Bush drained the country with a WMD SCAM that lined the pockets of Defense Contractors and Oil Companys and killed over 4000 US Troops.

Bush's Supreme Court just voted to allow unlimited campaign contributions from Special Interest Groups making it where huge corporations pick who the candidates are that they allow us to vote for.

Republicans have wrecked the country and killed a bunch of soldiers for profit and we are going to be paying for it for a long long time. Get real!

Look at it this way if it weren't for Bush a black man would have never stood a chance in hades of becoming president in this bigot infested country.

What is Not acceptable is the fact that republican and space coast voters are not aware that Bush-Chaney spent all the money the United States had for the next 2 decades. You can't have exspensive rockets to the moon and Mars on credit cards. Until the wealthy people and corporations take their lobbying money and pay taxes with it, America will not have a great NASA program. Obama must first put this nation back to work and on fiscal sound policy before crashing 84 million dollars of rocket into a moon crater, just to see what happens. Get it No money Dummies, Bush gave it away.

I know you are new to Washington, Susan, so here is how it works. You withhold your support for health care until Obama fully funds NASA. That's how Louisiana's Senator Landrieu and Nebraska's Senator Nelson worked the system and got special money for their states.

JFK had a vision for the space program. Johnson had a vision. Regardless of what you think about Bush, even he had a vision for the next generation of space exploration. Obama suffers from Myopia.

Replying to loutefre - no matter how good the economy' no matter how much you tax the wealthy and corporation; Obama is simply not interested in science or space. The only "science" that interests him is social-engineering.

Believe that change on the space coast will only go from bad to worse.

Anonynous says, "no one outside this sorry country cares".
I am one Canadian who does. I have followed the program since the Gemeni days and grew believing that the future was there for all. Having also served in the peactime military, I am acutly aware of the long history of our two nations serving alongside in many past and current conflicts. For this and many more reasons I am angered (and saddened" by your "sorry country" reference.

Big mistake to cut NASA funding. If that happens, we lose our edge in space exploration and related research.

I think everyone who thinks all the corporations need to pay the little guy will miss them as they take even more jobs overseas, where they will still make their money they just won't have to give us ANY!!!! At least while they are here, they have to employ people and that is at least SOMETHING...But yeah they owe use %90 taxes and $87/hr jobs...do you see how dumb we look?!?!?!?

You guys voted for this with your choice of Obama. Florida Today also supports ending space flight via their support for the antichrist.

I think people could get excited about inducing climate change on Venus to make it inhabitable. Seems to me it's the only other planet where humans might have a chance of living in the open, without life support systems.

I am so tired of all the worry about the "welfare program" being conducted at Nasa. I think they should take a good long look at some of the people working there and exactly what they are doing. Everyone knows that the space jobs concist of MANY slackers getting a free ride. I think a lot of people know that there is much abuse of the system up there but everyone is afraid of what the cutbacks will do. Well we are all cutting back and why should we have to pay for highly paid people that are doing nothing.

It will be an awakening for the Obamaphites when his REAL plan starts going into action. Behind the scenes he has nominated and placed many actively involved Muslim officials into some of the most powerful positions in his administration. Truly, if Obama's name was Patrick O'Leary, and he was Catholic (as a boy he attended Catholic school, I mean) and he named and assigned active Catholics into top positions of government, wouldn't that make a few eyebrows raise? Wouldn't we start to think, oh, is he trying to get in good with the Vatican? Will our country start valuing more Catholic ideals...
Hello, it's the same thing, only with Muslims! Get the picture everyone! If you'd be skeptical with the Catholic officials (whose policies by the way have never threatened our country), what do you think is going on in real time with the Muslims?

Obama lied, NASA and Brevard died.

I voted against Kosmas, but if she can save the space program then she has my vote next time. It's time for an Independent party in this country. The far right and far left are turning us into a third world country.

Congresswoman Kosmas hit the nail on the head. I believe that President Obama and his cast of left wing liberal "Princess Polosi" etc. could care less about the future of our Space Program. Instead all they care about is making Government more powerful. Why do you think that they want to push Health Care so hard. Health Care generates millions of revenue and they want to control Health Care, The Auto Industry, The Banks, etc... Obama won't be happy until he turns our Government into a Socialistic, Marxist Government. Hopefully in three years it won't be too late to save our proud Country that our ancestors fought and gave their lifes for our freedom. Obama and his left wing liberal want to take all of our rights and freedoms away.

The sad truth is there is no money left for our Space Program after President Obama approved the biggest pork barrel spending project unfairly called a Stimulus Package. Most of the so called Stimulus Package had nothing to do with creating job it only went to wasteful pet projects of politicians.

I've grown up in Brevard, and I know the importance of the Space Program to our community. However, the inability to stay focused and on track with the Constellation program leaves me with serious doubts about NASA's ability to get the job done! Ares I has been plagued with redesigns, cost overruns and delays - and this would just be the beginning?! Billions of dollars already spent - for what? I understand the economic impact space exploration has on our community, but where do we draw the line? Do we support the hemorrhaging of money into a flawed NASA system and a seemingly doomed program just for the sake of our own economic stability? Or do we stand up and demand more from and for America's Space Program! We've already sent men to the moon - 40 years ago, but for some reason, we can't seem to figure out how to do it again? Something is not right with this picture!

Congresswoman, don't stop now. What is wrong with them. Don't they know how important our space program is. There have been many questions answered and not to mention the advancements. THEY NEED TO CONCENTRATE ON NATIONAL SECURITY, WATCHING OUR ECONOMY AND THE SPACE PROGRAM. We are handing all our pride over to other countries WHY, WHY ?????

It's laughable to call Obama "antichrist"... coming from those who could care less about the working poor, children, and sick who can't get health care insurance until they are close to death. I think I know what Jesus meant... I think he'd approve of health care for all Americans. We Christians know who's running the advertisements against health care reform... GREED. The greedy care about profits, not the well being of our people... our neighbors.

Anonymous said...

No health care for all of us = No Manned Space flights

Imagine thinking this country could afford expensive manned space flights but not affordable health insurance. Talk about sick! That is sick!

Where were all of you for the last four years while Bush and Griffin have been trashing our Space Shuttle? All the jobs in Florida would have been lost anyway, because the Constellation jobs are all in other states. But Constellation was too heavy to fly and would have been more expensive than the Shuttle if it could fly. It's not too late. If NASA would just admit it made a mistake and propose returning the Shuttle to full operational status, the jobs in Brevard would be saved and there would be no spaceflight gap.

So this is what they meant by "Change you can believe in?"
