Blogger update, 3:20 p.m.: Within 30,000 feet of each other, the crews of shuttle Discovery and the International Space Station talked and heard each other "loud and clear."Space shuttle Discovery is within 10 miles and within sight of the International Space Station, more than 200 miles above Earth.
Just after 2:30 p.m. EDT, Discovery's crew successfully performed a 12-second "terminal initiation" burn that put it on track to reach the station in another orbit.
"Looks like your company is heading straight to you now," a flight controller in Houston radioed to the station crew.
"Fantastic, that's excellent news," replied Expedition 18 commander Mike Fincke. "We'll be ready for them."
Discovery's pre-docking back flip beneath the station is scheduled at 4:11 p.m. EDT, followed by docking at 5:12 p.m. EDT.
