The countdown to a planned Atlas rocket launch is under way at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station today as United Launch Alliance and the Air Force aim to send up a military communications satellite that will serve U.S. troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The 19-story Atlas V and its payload -- a Wideband Global SATCOM spacecraft -- are slated to blast off from Launch Complex 41 at the cape at 9:24 p.m. The launch window today will extend through 10:01 p.m.

We'll have updates throughout the countdown, so make sure to refresh this page for the latest. We'll also webcast the live United Launch Alliance launch coverage here in The Flame Trench beginning about 25 minutes before launch.

The countdown picked up at 2:24 p.m. and engineers started turning on Atlas systems and prepared to begin testing the rocket's flight control and guidance systems. Engineers also are starting final preparations to begin fuel-loading operations.

The weather forecast calls for a 60-percent chance conditions will be acceptable for flight. A cold front approaching the central Florida area is expected to bring thick clouds and gusty winds.
