Live in Orbit: Crew prepares for return

Discovery's astronauts today test the shuttle's re-entry and landing systems ahead of Saturday's planned return to Kennedy Space Center.

The crew woke to "Bright Side of the Road" by Van Morrison. The song, piped in at 5:13 a.m. by Houston's Mission Control Center, was for astronaut Richard Arnold.

The crew is scheduled to stow items in the crew cabin this morning and complete a check of Discovery's flight control surfaces.

Also on today's schedule: a 1:03 p.m. conversation with students at Panahou School in Hawaii, where President Barack Obama graduated in 1979.

The shuttle is expected to end its 13-day mission with a return at 1:38 p.m. Saturday - about five minutes earlier than previously scheduled. The deorbit burn is scheduled for 12:36 p.m. that day. There would be a second opportunity to land at KSC at 3:14 p.m.

Check back here for updates throughout the day and to find out the weather forecast for Saturday's planned landing.
