A European TV satellite is circling high above the planet after separating on time from the Centaur upper stage of an Atlas rocket launched from Cape Canaveral at 4:27 p.m.
The key milestone for the satellite-delivery mission marked the 79th consecutive success for Lockheed Martin Atlas rockets. The impressive streak dates back to March 1993.
The mission also marked the 100th flight for International Launch Services, a U.S.-Russian partnership that markets Atlas and Proton rocket launch services to spacecraft manufacturers and operators around the world.
Next up on the Space Coast: the planned May 18 launch of a U.S. government weather satellite aboard a Boeing Delta 4 rocket.
Here are a sampling of our photographs from today's launch.
