A covered barge departed its dock at Kennedy Space Center this morning, sailing toward a New Orleans factory to pick up the external tank for NASA's next shuttle mission.
Guided by two tugboats, the barge set off from the KSC turn basin about 9:20 a.m. and should arrive at the Michoud Assembly Facility late next week.
Senior shuttle managers will meet next Thursday at Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., to determine when to ship the 15-story fuel reservoir.
Work on the tank is nearly complete. Shipment is scheduled for March 3 but might be moved up a full week. In that case, the barge would depart the New Orleans factory next Friday and arrive at KSC five days later.
