Astronaut lasts another week on Survivor

Astronaut Dan Barry survived a second week.

The former shuttle astronaut is now one of 14 castaways left on the 12th season of the Survivor reality TV show.

Things looked bad at the start. The existing four tribes were broken up and turned into two, with members selected by each other like pick-up baseball games in the schoolyard. Dan, a likable enough member of the cast, was picked next to last.

He then earned his keep twice, contributing in two very physical challenges. The first victory won Barry's tribe badly-needed fishing gear so they could try to get something to eat (too bad one of his fellow tribe members later dropped the fishing spear to the bottom of the ocean).

The second time, Barry's team easily won immunity. For the second week, Barry did not have to go to the tribal council and face a potential vote ending his run.

The side story developing is that Barry and the fighter pilot Terry that he befriended on last week's show have joined forces with two other men in a pledge to fight together and not to vote one another off the island.

They seem to be four of the stronger members of their tribe anyway, so maybe it's irrelevant for the time being. In general, Dan wasn't a prime part of the story line in the second episode.
