Obama Calls Shuttle-Station Crew

President Obama called the joined crews of Discovery and the International Space Station today and paid tribute to the shuttle orbiter on its final flight as well as all the nations involved with the complex construction of orbiting outpost.

And he also kidded the crew for keeping their android crewmate Robonaut 2 enclosed in packing foam.

"Are you guys making him do chores up there? Washing the dishes? Or does he have a more exciting job?" Obama asked the crew in a call from the White House.

"Well, sir, we actually just pulled him out of our Permanent Multipurpose Module that we just delivered and installed two days ago. I think we pulled him out yesterday he's off camera," said Discovery mission commander Steve Lindsey. "He's still in packing foam, so we hope to get him out shortly and it's going to be fun to see how he works."

"He's still in packing foam -- that's a shame, man. Come on guys, unpack the guy." Obama said with a laugh. "He flew all that way and you guys aren't unpacking him?"

"Yeah, you know, that poor guy has been packed in that foam for about four months now. And every once in a while we hear kind of some scratching sounds. And maybe, you know, 'Let me out. Let me out.' But we're not sure," Lindsey replied.

"All right, well, let him stretch his legs pretty soon," Obama said.

Of course, Robonaut doesn't have legs. Only an upper torso.

Obama also took time to ask station skipper Scott Kelly how he is holding up. His twin brother Mark, also an astronaut, is the husband of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., who was shot in the head in a Jan. 8 assassination attempt in Tucson that killed six and wounded more than a dozen people.

"Scott, I talked to Mark a couple of days ago. It sounds like Gabby is making incredible progress and we're just thrilled for them," Obama said. "And they're all in our thoughts and prayers as well, and I know that's been a deep concern for you, so I just wanted you to know that."

"Yes sir, thank you. She's really a true inspiration to all of us. I appreciate your words," Kelly said.
