Discovery to launch no earlier than Dec. 3

Shuttle managers today decided that Dec. 3 is the earliest Discovery will be ready to launch following several weeks of repairs.

That would give the shuttle four days to launch before the end of the year, in a window that extends through Dec. 6. If the shuttle misses that window, the next opportunity could be in late February.

Discovery's Nov. 5 launch attempt scrubbed because of a hydrogen gas leak during fueling. In an unrelated problem, four cracks were later found in parts of the external tank.

After a meeting today, shuttle managers scheduled a special meeting Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving, to update the progress of repairs and discuss a flight rationale.

A follow-up launch status briefing with senior NASA managers, which had been planned Monday, has been pushed back a week to Nov. 29.

If that briefing concludes with a "go" to launch Dec. 3, launch teams would be called to their stations the next day.

Launch on the 3rd now is slated for 2:51 a.m. EST -- one second before 2:52 a.m.

Gomer would have to find another job like he was warned about since 2005 wouldn't he? Oh that's right, the Republicans that Gomer voted into office are going to save the day!! LMAO

Yeah President Bush all the people still love you in Brevard. You not President Obama decided to scuttle the Space Shuttle when you needed more money for some new war. Well people here have altered memories and think you are a great guy still and don't want to believe you caused all the jobs to dry up in the Space Coast. The state bird has been chosen it is an Ostitch and we have plenty of sand to bury our heads in until 2012 when we dutifully and blindly re-elect a Republican.

Just scrub the launch until the beginning of March, move Endeavour to the end of the summer, and slip Atlantis into 2012...assuming there is an STS-135. Hey, why not.

maybe if you took the time to actually read and understand what he meant, was that modern day brevard would more than likely be alot different had it not been for nasa puuting up shop and building their launch pads there. take the time to read before you post

Hey ya'll, let's re-elect the 'Big 0' in 2012. Maybe next time he can kill more than Constellation and send the county even further back into the dark ages. That would be great! Right?

Just so you know It was Bush that killed the space program. Obama just didn't do anything to change what Bush started. Bush needed the funding to support two wars, in Iraq & Afghanistan. Obama got stuck with the country going through a recession with thousands of lost jobs, foreclosures, bailouts, ways to try to stimulate the economy, etc. I have sense to realize that much and I didn't even vote for Obama. Integrating government politics and science like the space program relying on govt funding killed the space program. It didn't have anything to do with which party / President was in office when the country is broke. Blame the senators & bankers who abuse the system & never pay a dime out of their pockets for health care, lavish business meals, etc. Nasa employees seemed to have those same benefits & privileges which the taxpayers can't afford anymore. Wait a few more months & you'll see.

"Disgruntled workers who had friends & co-workers recently laid off produced low employee morale not knowing what the future holds for all other contract workers out at Nasa"

Wow, it's difficult to believe that there is ANY contractor left out at the Space Center who doesn't believe their job is going away next year. If there is any shuttle contractor who believes they'll still have their job this time next year, they should be dismissed now for mental health concerns.

8000+ contractors WILL be layed off next year. It's a done deal. And since Obama cancelled the Constellation program, those jobs won't be coming back.

Uh, yeah he did. He cancelled Constellation.

Not sure what you mean here, but Nasa employees are not getting laid off. Only the contractors.
