Commercial space advocates predict 12,000 new jobs annually

A study just released by the Commercial Spaceflight Federation predicts that President Obama's proposed new direction for NASA will result in nearly 12,000 direct new jobs annually, nationwide, over the next five years.

Click here to check out the seven-page study, which does not break out the projected job growth in Florida.

And here's a press release from the federation, which commissioned the study by The Tauri Group of Alexandria, Va.

In a press conference last Thursday, NASA Administrator Charlie Bolden said President Obama's proposed $6 billion increase to NASA's budget over five years would likely result in more jobs, but he could not provide specific estimates.

Kennedy Space Center expects to shed about 8,000 positions as a result of the shuttle program's long-planned retirement later this year and the president's proposed cancellation of the Constellation moon program.

The report's release comes as space industry leaders meet in Colorado Springs, Colo., for an annual symposium and two days before President Obama's planned space conference at KSC.

12,000 new jobs a year for the next five years?? How far up the President's a$$ did they have to reach to pull that number out in one piece??

The dollars divided by jobs created makes me scratch my head.

Is there a breakdown of jobs by state. How many in Florida?

There smoking something in their pipe...The IRS will be making more jobs then the Space Center.

However, that means that when we outsource our Manned Spaceflight to China, that would be approximately 20k jobs per year there...

"The dollars divided by jobs created makes me scratch my head."

Why? It works out to about $100,000 per job. Makes sense.

Study presentation is here:
http://www.taurigroup.com/graphics/snapshots/DERPCCCEPBR.pdf

Total dollars = 6.112 billion.

Direct jobs estimate as a result:
2011: 7520
2012: 14200
2013: 14010
2014: 12188
2015: 11031
Total direct jobs: 58,949

6.112 billion / 58,949 = $103,682.84 / job

Oh bull crap! Anybody knows that the business model for all of these commercial companies (aka, "new.space") revolves around having as few people as possible on the payroll, maximizing the proportion of direct-labor to indirect-labor (overhead). This helps them keep a worthwhile profit margin to get a return on investment. You don't get that by hiring so many people.

I strongly support Obama's FY 2011 NASA budget proposal, but even I don't buy the average 12K jobs/year estimate.

who comes up with this bull?

Of course the jobs will be in Hawthorne, CA (SpaceX)...home state of Pelosi!

Anonymous said...

Yea cuz we all know pelosi had so much involement with SpaceX. It's not like CA has had intersts in space jobs for what, 20 years?

And the moral of this story, no one believe them...

Pelosi's district is about 400 miles from SpaceX. Just goes to show how educated are people who make such a ridiculous argument, they can't even read a map.

12,000 new jobs that none of the obsolete people at KSC could get! At least there will be smarter people moving into the area! Amen to that!
