Atlantis spacewalker Randy Bresnik's wife delivered a baby girl, Abigail Mae Bresnik, late Saturday in Houston. Bresnik announced the news this morning, the day after conducting his first spacewalk outside the International Space Station.
"Very thankful for everyone there at Mission Control and everywhere else at NASA that's been so supportive and essentially so helpful the last couple days with everything that's been going on," Bresnik said.
The birth had been anticipated since Friday. It occured at 11:04 p.m. Central time.
Bresnik now is the second U.S. astronaut to be in orbit for the birth of a child.
Mike Fincke was the first in June 2004, when he was in the midst of a six-month tour on the space station. The couple has an adopted son, Wyatt.
The Atlantis crew mostly has an off-duty day today, but Bresnik will prepare for his second spacewalk on Monday, with mission specialist Bobby Satcher.
It's the last spacewalk planned during an 11-day mission to deliver spare parts to the station.
The shuttle is scheduled to depart the outpost Wednesday and land at Kennedy Space Center the day after Thanksgiving.
Bresnik's wife is not expected to attend the landing. Bresnik hopes to return home to Houston "as soon as possible."

2:33 p.m. Begin review of procedures for spacewalk No. 3.
4:53 p.m. Mission specialists Randy Bresnik and Bobby Satcher begin pre-spacewalk "campout" in Quest airlock.
5:58 p.m. Station crew sleeps.
6:28 p.m. Atlantis crew sleeps.
