Waste of what? The money that was spent on this went right back into the American economy. Meanwhile, we will gain more knowledge of the universe we live in.
It wasn't a waste of money. Because if the data collected shows that water-ice DOES NOT exist in large quantities on the Moon, then NASA must be given a new destination. Mars must be that destination.
Stuff like this is interesting, but I 'm not sure it's worth the billions invested. I personally would rather see money invested in something more useful, like inducing climate change on Venus to make it inhabitable, or hauling Titan back to Earth orbit, to be a source of fuel for a few millennium.

WASTE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ditto.
Crashed with a whimper? Guess we got to wait and see if the data stream can be cleaned up for more details.
The media really hyped this up tho NASA did nothing to temper those expectations.
Still it was cool going in for the nosedive on Tee-Vee. :)
The regolith must have been really soft and deep. Only thing to account for nothing visible. Poof.
Let's be patient, people - they DID get some data.

My guess is that there was no dirt, just hard solid rock.
