NASA is passing up the first of two opportunities to bring shuttle Atlantis and its crew home today as a result of bad weather in the Kennedy Space Center area. Rain showers and low clouds are in the area at this time.
The seven astronauts on Atlantis will now target one remaining landing opportunity today at 11:39 a.m. There is some hope the weather will clear enough to land at that time.
NASA was aiming for a 10 a.m. landing. The wave-off call went up to the crew just before they were scheduled to close the shuttle's payload bay doors for the return trip home.
Communications with the crew was interrupted slightly today because one of two NASA Tracking & Data Relay Satellites was not working properly. NASA regain communications through the satellite, so Mission Control will be able to remain in near-constant contact with the astronauts.
