A new U.S. military navigation satellite is circling Earth today after a night-owl launch aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The Navstar Global Positioning System satellite was deployed into an orbit 11,000 nautical miles above Earth about 5:42 a.m. -- 68 minutes after liftoff from Launch Complex 17A at the Cape.
The countdown and the flight both appeared to go flawlessly. The satellite is the 47th Navstar GPS spacecraft to be deployed aboard Delta II rockets and it was the 87th consecutive Delta II launch success.
