President Barack Obama will call the crew of shuttle Discovery this morning and congratulate them on a stellar mission to the International Space Station, according to ABC News.
ABC's Gina Sunseri tells Florida Today that the president will be joined by Congressional leaders and middle school students from the Washington, D.C., area while he makes the call from the White House Oval Office.
The call is scheduled for 9:40 a.m. EDT Tuesday. NASA's latest STS-119 NASA's TV Schedule does not list the call specifically. But it does show a new listing for a "PAO Downlink Opportunity" at 9:49 a.m.
Check it out here: NASA TV Schedule.
No specific mention of the call was made when Mission Control beamed up today's wake-up music at 6:13 a.m. But the crew was strongly advised to read "Message 108" in their Flight Day 10 Execute Package, which contains their daily timeline and morning mail.
Mission Control wanted to make sure they read about a PAO event coming up in about four hours.
For the record, the wake-up music was "Andrew's Song" by the Houston band, Tree Stump. The daughter of Discovery mission specialist John Phillips plays base guitar for the band.
The presidential call will come on what should a light day for the joined crews of the shuttle and the station. The 10 astronauts aboard Discovery and the station will have an off-duty day, for the most part.
A joint crew news conference will be held at 1:05 p.m.
Crew off-duty time will begin at 2:03 p.m., and the shuttle crew will hit the sack at 10:13 p.m.
Video of the flight of the shuttle's twin solid rocket boosters will be played on NASA TV at 3 p.m., and the daily Mission Status Briefing will be on at 4 p.m.
