Launch crews at the Kennedy Space Center are preparing the space shuttle Discovery for fueling, which is set to begin around noon.

Overnight, NASA backed a tower of steel platforms away from the spaceship. Earlier this morning, they activated the orbiter's fuel cells and recently got a weather update ahead of a late-morning meeting to decide whether to fuel Discovery.

Weather is expected to be near perfect tonight for a scheduled 9:20 p.m. liftoff of the space shuttle and seven astronauts on a mission to the International Space Station.

Barring unexpected problems, the crews should get clearance to start loading more than 500,000 gallons of liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen into Discovery's 15-story external tank. The fuel-loading operation usually takes three hours to complete.

You can watch NASA TV and Florida Today live coverage of the countdown and launch live here in The Flame Trench. Until 4 p.m., simply click the NASA TV box on the righthand side of the page to launch our NASA TV viewer.
