Watch 50th birthday gala here tonight

Tonight, you can tune in here to The Flame Trench to watch a live broadcast of NASA's 50th anniversary gala celebration in suburban Washington.

The event, a week ahead of the agency's birthday on Oct. 1, is being broadcast live on NASA Television and we'll carry the feed here live in our blog. The party starts at 8 p.m. and features some big stars from the agency's past and present.

Sponsored by the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics is taking place at the new "annex" facility of the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum.

Among the big names taking part are former astronauts John Glenn and Neil Armstrong. Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell is part of a video presentation and there are musical performances by Quincy Jones and Frank Sinatra Jr. planned too.
