Live in Orbit: 1st spacewalk delayed 24 hours!

Stanley Love (left) will replace Hans Schlegel (right) on the first spacewalk, which will be delayed 24 hours to Monday.

The installation of the Columbus module will be delayed a day. Astronaut Stan Love will take Hans Schlegel's place for the first spacewalk, which will be delayed 24 hours. Schlegel, a German representing the European Space Agency, is 56.

Space adaptation sickness is the apparent cause.

"It's not life threatening," according to John Shannon co-chair of the Mission Management Team.

The first spacewalk, originally scheduled for Sunday, was to prepare the Columbus module to be grappled by the robot arm and moved to the space station, also on Sunday.

NASA is working on a plan to reschedule the other two spacewalks, Shannon said. The mission's objectives will not be changed, but the mission will be extended a day, he added.

Citing NASA's rules about medical privacy, Shannon would not confirm that Schlegel was sick or describe anything about the illness that caused the delay. He would not answer reporters' repeated questions about the nature of the illness.

"You guys can fish all day, but I'm not going to bite," said Shannon.

Shannon, however, mentioned that motion sickness was common on entry to microgravity.
