Shuttle crew arrival on tap

Discovery's astronauts will fly to Kennedy Space Center today while NASA and its contractor work force prepares to pick up the countdown to the planned launch next Tuesday of an International Space Station assembly mission.

Look for the crew, led by Pam Melroy -- who is only the second female shuttle mission commander -- to arrive at KSC in T-38 Talon training jets around 1 p.m.

On the outpost, meanwhile, U.S. astronaut Peggy Whitson will become the first female commander of the station during a Change-Of-Command Ceremony set for 2:15 p.m.

Both events will be webcast live here in The Flame Trench. Simply click the link below the image above to launch our NASA TV viewer.

Melroy and her crew are set for launch at 11:38 a.m. next Tuesday. If the launch proceeds as planned, Melroy and Whitson will become the first two women to simultaneusly command space missions.

A three-day shuttle launch countdown is set to begin at 2 p.m. Saturday. Call-to-stations in the Launch Control Center at KSC will be a half-hour earlier.
