Atlantis booster stacking continues

The stacking of two segmented solid rocket boosters for the planned Aug. 28 launch of shuttle Atlantis continued today inside Kennedy Space Center's landmark Vehicle Assembly Building.

Crane operators hoisted the bottom segment of the shuttle's lefthand booster -- known as the aft booster assembly -- in the the 52-story building.

Delivered to the VAB earlier today, the segment was lifted up over a transom at the 16th floor of the building and then lowered onto a mobile launcher platform in high bay 3.

The aft booster assembly for the shuttle's righthand booster was hoisted onto the launcher platform late Thursday. The remaining segments of the boosters will be stacked before an external tank is fitted between them.

The orbiter Atlantis is to be mated to the stack July 25. The fully assembled shuttle is to roll out to launch pad 39B on Aug. 1.
