The weather at Kennedy Space Center and global jet stream conditions look as if they could be acceptable for a launch next Tuesday of Steve Fossett's attempt to make the longest non-stop flight in aviation history.
Fossett is seriously considering a take off run between 6:48 p.m. and 7:11 a.m. that day.
Piloting the Virgin Atlantic GlobalFlyer, the American adventurer aims to take off from the south end of the three-mile shuttle runway and then circle the globe before crossing the Atlantic Ocean a second time and landing at an airport east of London.
The 80-hour trip would cover a record 26,160 miles.
