KSC Director Sees Bright Future At America's Spaceport

The director of Kennedy Space Center and key deputies have laid out plans to aggressively execute President Obama's plan for NASA's primary spaceport when and if Congress gives the administration a go-ahead on the proposed 2011 budget for the agency.

KSC Director Robert Cabana and top-line managers said the center stands poised to open a Commercial Crew Development Project Office that would work quickly to issue requests for proposals from industry. Contract awards could come during the second half of 2011, managers said.

Plans also have been put in place to make sweeping modifications that would convert KSC into Obama's envisioned "21st century spaceport," a place where the shuttle landing strip, processing hangars, the Vehicle Assembly Building and the launch pads would be opened up to commercial companies.
