International Space Station Population Doubles After New Crew Arrival

The population of the International Space Station doubled tonight to a half-dozen after the arrival of a fresh crew that includes a Russian cosmonaut and two American astronauts.

Fyodor Yurchikhin, Shannon Walker and Douglas Wheelock arrived at the outpost on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft after a two-day trip from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. They joined up with Alexander Skvortsov, Mikhail Kornieko and Tracy Caldwell-Dyson, who arrived on the station in April and will be there until September.

The two crews floated in the Zvezda Service Module, which is the core of Russian side of the station, and they had handshakes and hugs and then talked with officials, friends and family members at the Russian Mission Control Center in Korolev outside Moscow.

"It's great to see all you guys in space together, all six of you," NASA space operations chief Bill Gerstenmaier said. "Enjoy your time. Enjoy your free shifts. The time will go by fast. But make sure you enjoy yourselves."

The newly arrived crewmembers will be onboard until November.
