Spacewalking astronauts Stephen Bowen and Mike Good are on the far left end of the International Space Station's 335-foot-long central truss, tackling the main objective of their excursion outside the outpost.
The two Atlantis mission specialists aim to remove and replace three batteries that have been powering station systems since December 2000, when they were delivered aboard the STS-97 mission.
The P6 truss is equipped with 12 of the 375-pound batteries, which are designed to operate for 6.5 years in low Earth orbit. Six of them were swapped out on a mission last year. Three will be changed out today. The final three will be swapped out Friday during the third and final spacewalk of the mission.
