"Hello Twitterverse!" That's how the first Twitter message sent directly from space began, sent today by NASA astronaut T.J. Creamer thanks to improved Internet access aboard the International Space Station.
"We r now LIVE tweeting from the International Space Station -- the 1st live tweet from Space! :) More soon, send your ?s," Creamer wrote.
Tweets previously had to be sent to ground personnel for posting online.
In a press release today, NASA said a software upgrade this week now allows station crew members personal Internet access and Web surfing through a wireless connection.
They'll access a ground computer remotely when high-speed communications are possible.
The astronauts already had access to e-mail, videoconferencing and the ability to make Internet Protocol phone calls to family and friends.
In addition to Creamer, Expedition 22 commander Jeff Williams and flight engineer Soichi Noguchi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency also have Twitter accounts.
NASA says the astronauts must follow the same Internet use policies as all other government employees.
Russian cosmonauts Max Suraev and Oleg Kotov are also on board the orbiting outpost.
