Boeing lays off 36 KSC workers

The Boeing Company laid off 36 workers today, a mix of engineers and support staff at Kennedy Space Center who received 60-day notices of job termination.

"The forecast number was 40," Boeing spokeswoman Susan Wells said.

Two workers were redeployed to Boeing programs in other areas.

"During that 60 days we'll still work on redeploying them to other programs and offering career services," Wells said. "Boeing is committed to preserve as many jobs as possible."

Boeing employs about 1,000 workers in Brevard County, 300 of whom support the shuttle program directly. Boeing has forecast it will lose 330 workers by the time the shuttle program ends late this year or early in 2011. Additional layoffs are scheduled in May and in August. Layoff numbers have not been set.

"That's going to be based on the skills required by the shuttle manifest," Wells said.

Some 7,000 space industry workers will lose their jobs by the time the shuttle program ends, causing the loss of 14,000 public sector jobs and raising the unemployment rate to near 15 percent in Brevard.

Welcome to the Club....I'm in the construction industry and in 2007 I was laid off twice from the same employer, was hired by another company and laid off 3 months later..was fortunate yet once again to get hired by another company and was able to last almost one year before getting laid off again...received 2 week notice (prior to that I was given 2 hour notice), no offer of career services or retraining. I feel for the employees in the Space program but what about us in Brevard County that worked in construction? It's been brutal :(

AFTER 30 years you should have learned something, like arse kissing gets WAY better results. The 1/10th experience shows you weren't as brilliant after all.

30 years of seniority does not mean diddly at the space center?

It does if your in a union...

No, 30 years of experience doesn't mean jack. Dedication, knowledge none of it means squat - it's a shame that layoffs aren't happening in the XA directorate...

Not to worry, Obama's going to come to the rescue and save everybody. A chicken in every pot!

Well, I hope that they remember to keep the people that have the right skills and experience to do the jobs to protect the lives of the astronauts that fly on the shuttle otherwise there may not be a space program at all. Remember to work on the Aerospace program like your family would be on the next mission.
