A United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket quickly vanished through a cloud layer after blasting off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 5:32 p.m.
The rocket's common core booster separated from the vehicle a little more than four minutes into flight, as scheduled.
The payload fairing was jettisoned seconds later.
NASA' Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter is scheduled to separate and begin a four-day voyage to the moon about 46 minutes into flight, after two Centaur engine burns.
Centaur upper stage systems are performing well. Tracking and Data Relay Satellites are monitoring its performance.
