Live At KSC: Weather 80 Percent Go For Launch

NASA is gearing up for the countdown to the planned launch Saturday of shuttle Endeavour and engineers are not working any technical showstoppers.

What's more, the weather forecast for launch calls for a Bermuda High pressure ridge over central Florida -- a condition that would result in favorable weather for the 7:17 a.m. launch Saturday.

"Actually the weather is looking very good," said NASA Test Director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson. "The weather forecast for launch day is 80 percent go."

That means there is only a 20 percent chance that conditions would prohibit a launch. The prime concerns is the possibility of cumulus clouds or showers within 20 nautical miles of the Shuttle landing Facility.

NASA launch rules call for conditions to be relatively clear at NASA's three-mile runway in case a failure early in flight prompts an unprecedented emergency landing attempt.

Preparations at launch pad 39A, meanwhile, are proceeding without significant problems. Engineers completed the pressurization of hypergolic fuel tanks and all work in the rear engine compartment has been completed.

Call-to-stations in Firing Room 4 of the Launch Control Center will be at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. A three-day launch countdown will pick up at 9 a.m.
