Live At KSC: Decision Day For Shuttle Launch Date

Senior NASA managers and administrators are in a flight readiness review at this hour and are expected to firm up a June 13 launch date for shuttle Endeavour and seven astronauts by the end of business today.

Endeavour and its six-man, one-woman crew are tentatively scheduled to blast off from Kennedy Space Center's launch pad 39A at 7:17 a.m. June 13.

Engineers now are reviewing an analysis of the failure of an electronics box during the May 11 launch of shuttle Atlantis and NASA's fifth and final Hubble Space Telescope servicing crew. The avionics box is one of four that control the orbiter's aerosurfaces during the shuttle's nine-minute climb into orbit.

An electrical short circuit knocked one of the four out of commission. But the three others were operating as intended and the flight control system worked without further trouble.

NASA engineers still have not pinpointed the cause of the short because Atlantis just returned Tuesday from a back-up landing site in California. Technicians have not yet been able to access the area where the avionics box is mounted in the shuttle's rear engine compartment.

But the engineers believe the short likely will be traced to bad wiring. They do not think there is a generic problem with the avionics boxes -- one that might jeopardize the Endeavour crew.

You can follow along with the progress of the meeting by clicking NASA Tweets. Mike Curie, a spokesman for the agency's space operations directorate in Washington, D.C., is broadcasting updates on Twitter.

A post-FRR news conference is expected to take place around 5 p.m. No actual time has been set. It will occur about a half-hour after the conclusion of the meeting.

The Endeavour astronauts are here at Kennedy Space Center for a two-day practice countdown and emergency escape training at launch pad 39A.

Led by mission commander Mark Polansky, the crew includes pilot Douglas Hurley and five mission specialists: David Wolf, Tom Marshburn, Chris Cassidy, Tim Kopra and Canadian Space Agency astronaut Julie Payette.
