New Appeals to Obama to name NASA chief

FLORIDA TODAY's Eun Kyung Kim reports from Washington

A group of NASA-friendly House members joined the appeal to President Barack Obama to name a new agency chief as soon as possible, saying NASA "needs decisive leadership" to oversee changes related to next year's retirement of the space shuttles.

Government auditors named the grounding of the shuttles, along with the consequent five-year U.S. reliance on Russia for access to the International Space Shuttle, as one of the most urgent items facing the Obama administration, lawmakers pointed out in their letter.

"We believe it is imperative for NASA to have a leader who understands the implications of a five year or longer hiatus in America's independent access to space," according to the letter from the NASA House Action Team, co-chaired by Rep. Suzanne Kosmas, the New Smyrna Beach Democrat whose district includes Kennedy Space Center.

Rep. Bill Posey, a Rockledge Republican who is part of the House group, wrote a similar letter to Obama last week.

"I am also concerned that further delay in appointing an Administrator may lead some to conclude that space policy and our nation’s leadership in space is not a priority for the administration," Posey wrote.

Sen. Bill Nelson's office has said that they expect a decision on a new NASA administrator very soon.

Let's get this done quickly, and while we are at it follow Congressional advice and get rid of Cobb, the inspector General who is under FBI investigation for incompetence and failure to discharge his duties. NASA is getting a bad name with a terrible reputation for ineffeciency, corruption, and downright incompetence! If something isn't done soon, it will be disbanded!
