Live from Houston: Schlegel to make 2nd spacewalk

Stanley Love (left) will replace Hans Schlegel (right) on the first spacewalk, which was delayed 24 hours to Monday. However, Schlegel will make the second spacewalk Wednesday, as originally scheduled.

After an apparent bout with space adaptation sickness, Hans Schlegel will make the mission's second spacewalk on Wednesday.

"The plan is to perform the rest of the mission as (orignially) planned," said lead shuttle flight director Mike Sarafin.

A German astronaut representing the European Space Agency, Schlegel, 56, was scheduled to perform the first and second spacewalks with veteran spacewalker Rex Walheim. After consulation with the crew, flight surgeons delayed the first spacewalk 24 hours and changed the lineup.

Citing medical privacy policies, NASA officials said the medical issue is resolved. They refused to discuss the illness or even confirm that Schlegel was ill. This morning, however, a European flight director wished Schlegel a speedy recovery.

Schlegel was seen working on NASA-TV throughout the day Sunday.

NASA expected to bring up a failed computer, and the thermal protection system has been cleared, though a final inspection will take place before re-entry. Five chips in tile were found.

"Atlantis is extremely clean," John Shannon, deputy shuttle program manager, said.

The results of today's inspection of the tear in the OMS pod insulation blanket will be studied to determine whether repairs are necessary. On STS-117 this summer, a torn insulation blanket was mended by a spacewalker with a surgical stapler.

"We'll let the OMS pod inspection drive the results there," said Sarafin.

A fourth spacewalk will not be added, however, spacewalkers might inspect the damaged solar array rotary joint if they have time.
