Live at KSC: Hatch closed; weather improving

The hatch is closed on the shuttle Atlantis with about two hours remaining in the countdown.

The official weather forecast is out now, citing a slightly increasing chance of a launch today. There is now just a 60 percent chance of unacceptable conditions.

Skies over the Vehicle Assembly Building and the launch pads are clearing. A front continues to approach from the northwest.

However, weather reconnaissance flights and balloons are providing data that gives the launch team some signs of hope.

As of right now, NASA could launch the shuttle under current conditions.

The question is whether these conditions will hold as the front closes in.

At the pad, the close-out crew is packing up their gear and getting ready to leave the launch pad.

There are no technical problems to report with the shuttle or ground support equipment.
