Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin just replaced a faulty circuit breaker outside the International Space Station, clearing the way for additional assembly at the outpost during a shuttle mission next month.
Working within a truss segment mounted on top of the U.S. Destiny laboratory, Yurchikhin removed the failed breaker and installed a spare as the station circled some 200 miles above Earth.
The circuit breaker is one of two connected to electrical lines that route power to a cart-like Mobile Transporter used to move the outpost's robot arm to different locations on the station's central truss.
NASA flight directors wanted to have both prime and back-up breakers in place before moving the transporter to a new work site in advance of the arrival next month of shuttle Endeavour and a visiting construction crew. The shuttle astronauts will deliver a new section for the starboard side of the central truss. They are scheduled to launch Aug. 7 from Kennedy Space Center.
