NASA today was marking the 50th anniversary of the first U.S. human spaceflight.
On May 5 1961, Alan Shepard strapped into Freedom 7 and blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, becoming the first American to rocket into space.
That historic first is being marked this morning with a ceremony at the Cape, featuring Shepard's daughters and Mercury astronaut Scott Carpenter. Some 200 Project Mercury workers were also scheduled to attend.
