Repairs were ordered to small cracks on several support beams called "stringers" on the tank's mid-section.
Managers will meet again Monday to reassess options for modifications.
Despite the new development, NASA says Discovery could still be readied for launch by Feb. 3.
NASA has been studying the tank's ridged intertank area since cracks on two stringers were found after a Nov. 5 launch attempt.
Discovery was rolled back to the Vehicle Assembly Building on Dec. 21 so inspectors could examine stringers that were inaccessible at the pad, on the side of the tank facing away from the orbiter.
That's where small cracks on several new stringers found. They were reported today.

They should scrap the old, out of date program now before it kills anyone else.
What we are now witnessing is the end of NASA human space flight as we knew it. It was brought on by the people, most of whom are currently running the show. Lack of leadership. NASA’s reputation was built on competence but their focus on our space program was defeated by overwhelming pride & ignorance.
Did anyone see Charlie on his lunch break today? Might need that fingerprint kit to search for clues as to why this thing suddenly keeps developing so many new cracks. OK Charlie? Where's that ball point pen Obama loaned you at that last meeting where you announced that NASA's new goals will be reaching out to the Muslim world? Where's Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson when we need them? Don't even joke & say they're on the unemployment line too. Not funny.
Would it be so wrong to blame the manufacturer of the tank, and make sure they pay for the repairs?
Sounds like they made a decision to have a meeting to set up a meeting to make a decision. Maybe. Details at 11.
Charlie Bolden = Epic Failure
Charlie Bolden is not really running NASA, Lori Garver is really RUINING NASA. Hope everybody enjoys Elon Musk and his White House buddies.
HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE !!!
