Ideas pitched for post-shuttle jobs

Nearly 20 presenters this morning offered ideas for job creation in and around the Space Coast that would help offset the impact of the shuttle program's planned shutdown next year.

The presenters at the Hyatt Regency at Orlando International Airport hope to capture some of the $40 million that a federal task force will spend to help diversify the region's post-shuttle economy.

Ideas included incentives and incubators for entrepreneurs and small businesses and expanding facilities or services at places like Port Canaveral or the shuttle logistics depot in Cape Canaveral.

Businesses proposed investment in various forms of "green" technologies ranging from LED lighting to new batteries to fuel-efficient sports cars.

Another 14 10-minute pitches are scheduled after a lunch break.

Space Florida and regional economic development groups plan to meet with task force representatives Wednesday to discuss today's proposals.
