Former KSC exec to lead NASA's Glenn center

NASA has tapped a former Merritt Island resident and longtime Kennedy Space Center executive to lead the agency's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Ramon "Ray" Lugo III, who started his NASA career as a cooperative education student in 1975, graduated from Merritt Island High and earned degrees from the University of Central Florida in 1979 and Florida Tech in 1982.

An early assignment as an engineer involved work to modify launch pad 39A for shuttle missions.

Most recently Glenn's deputy and acting director, Lugo previously served as deputy manager of the Launch Services Program based at KSC, which manages the launches of NASA science missions and weather satellites on expendable rockets.

He also served as executive director of the Cape Canaveral Spaceport Management Office and director of Expendable Launch Vehicle Services.

One of 10 NASA field centers, Glenn's focus is research, technology and systems development programs in space propulsion, space power, space communications, aeronautical propulsion and microgravity sciences.
