USA says goodbye to 300 KSC employees today

United Space Alliance today is laying off about 300 Kennedy Space Center employees, part of planned reductions as the the shuttle program winds down.

Including 76 more employees in Texas, Alabama and other sites, the company is cutting 4 percent of its workforce.

Most of the layoffs -- 96 percent -- were voluntary. The cuts were announced in April, but the numbers grew significantly since then, from 2 percent to 4 percent of the workforce.

Here's the story in today's FLORIDA TODAY.
