Mission Managers Wave Off Move Away From Deadly Space Junk

U.S. and Russian mission managers have decided to forgo a planned maneuver this evening that would move the International Space Station to a lower orbit in a bid to avoid a deadly collision with a wayward piece of space junk.

Trajectory experts on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean determined that the station and Atlantis would remain safe despite a projected closest approach with 10 kilometers between 60 to 90 minutes after the shuttle docks at the outpost. Docking is scheduled for 10:27 a.m. Sunday.
