Repair tests have begun

Testing has begun on repairs to Discovery's right landing gear strut, which leaked nearly 300 drops of hydraulic fluid per hour before the repair.

"Tonight we'll put the weight on the wheels," said NASA spokesman George Diller. "So far, everything has gone better than we hoped."

Testing will continue through Saturday, and Diller said the orbiter could move Sunday to the Vehicle Assembly Building and seven days later to the launch pad, where an Oct. 23 launch has been scheduled.

"If we get to a rollout (to the launch pad) on (Sept. 30), then I think the (launch on) the 23rd is achievable," he said. "The next week has got to go OK. We cannot have anything come up."
