A United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station today, setting sail with two NASA moon mappers on the first leg of lunar excursion.The 12-story rocket launched at 9:08 a.m., the second of two, one-second opportunities to put the spacecraft on course for a three-month journey to the moon.
The launch is the first leg of a $496 million mission to map the gravitational field of the moon. Doing so will enable scientists to determine the make-up of the moon from crust to core.
