NASA Moon Mappers Launch from Cape

A United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket blasted off from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station today, setting sail with two NASA moon mappers on the first leg of lunar excursion.

The 12-story rocket launched at 9:08 a.m., the second of two, one-second opportunities to put the spacecraft on course for a three-month journey to the moon.

The launch is the first leg of a $496 million mission to map the gravitational field of the moon. Doing so will enable scientists to determine the make-up of the moon from crust to core.
