Local Singer May Wake-Up Shuttle Crew

A singer-songwriter from Cocoa Beach is among 10 finalists in a contest to select original music to wake up the crew of shuttle Endeavour during the orbiter's 25th and final flight.

Susan Rose Simonetti's "Endeavour, It's A Brand New Day" was picked by NASA's Space Rock Committee from a field of 1,350 entrants in a contest aimed at selecting two original songs that will be beamed up to the astronauts during the final days of their two-week mission.

You can VOTE HERE for Simonetti's song or any of nine others. Audio files of the songs are posted at the site. Voting will continue through launch day. Liftoff is scheduled for 7:48 p.m. April 19.

NASA staged a similar contest prior to the 39th and final flight of shuttle Discovery, which was launched on Feb. 24. More than 2.4 million votes were tallied in a contest among Top 40 music. The winners: "Blue Sky" by Big Head Todd and The Monsters, and the "Star Trek Theme Song" by Alexander Courage.
