Senate releases draft omnibus bill language for NASA

A draft omnibus spending bill released today by U.S. Senate appropriators would give NASA $18.9 billion in the 2011 fiscal year and allow the agency to begin its post-Constellation program future. Here's a summary of the proposed spending plan:

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) – The agreement provides $18.9 billion for NASA, $186 million above the Fiscal Year 2010 level and $90 million less than the President’s request.
The total funding includes $989.1 million for base Space Shuttle operations; $2.7 billion for Space Station operations; $825 million for an additional Shuttle flight, if determined to be safe, and for launch infrastructure for the heavy lift rocket; $3 billion for development of the Orion multipurpose crew vehicle and the heavy lift launch vehicle; $5 billion for science; $580 million for aeronautics; and $559 million for space and exploration technology research.
It funds the agreement embodied in the NASA Authorization Act of 2010 to restructure NASA’s human spaceflight programs. It funds increases in science and aeronautics research, provides for development of a new heavy lift launch vehicle and Orion crew capsule for exploring beyond low-Earth orbit, extends the life of the International Space Station through 2020, supports the burgeoning commercial space industry, invests in new technology development, and allows one additional Space Shuttle flight, if determined to be safe.

See page 184 of the complete, nearly 2,000-page omnibus bill for the precise language.

Let me get this right right -- the Democrats just released a 2,000 page bill and they want it read, comprehended and voted on by Saturday?

Same old Obama politics.

hey, anonymous "Milk tax payers who have no Health Care and give it those on the Nepotism Posse so their families can have it!"

they don't have it because they refuse to pay for it...they think they are entitled to free health care, so they can spend their money instead on big screen tv, internet service, $100 month cell phone bills etc.

Defense Contractors think they are entitled to billions just so they can do no more than float around. They did that way cheaper and better in the 60's in case you missed it.

The Military Industrial Complex has robbed us blind and the free-loaders on the Space Program are nothing more than on a Glorified Social Welfare Program designed to pack the bank accounts of war criminals.

Listen you bloodsuckers Anon 6:32Pm & 9:40PM, We do a job for our pay, we went to school, the military, or some other method to learn our expertise and we don't expect to be provided free everything for it, we pay for our families health care, college, braces, food and everything else, unlike the jealous get, get, get, sloths like you who think everything is entitled to them. Hopefully the end of this "give me" mentality will be ending soon and the likes of you will have to earn what you get like we do!! We provide advancement to the country, while you only take at every turn of the corner!!

What I think is a sad note is Charlie Bolden said NO civil servants would lose any jobs! Here's a big story for you, I suddenly seen 20 new faces with temp badges that have been hired as civil servants by NASA for KSC! Not one looks over 30 and think its great to be starting at KSC! So if the money has stayed the same as 2010 then why cut whats needed, force lay-offs of NON-civil servant workers (which has done everything since the beginning only with NASA oversight)and start hiring more protected personnel? All NASA personnel do at KSC is sit in plush offices in suits and read reports of all the contractors work being done!
Charlie you better get your priorities straight or you will sink whats left of space flight ANYWHERE in the US.
As to the redecorating that was done...yes to headquarters for NASA personnel. Every building out there is filled with asbestos and is falling apart! if we dont fix them we need to tear them down and I know you will never find and NASA personnel driving fancy cars doing any demo work! NASA pays huge salaries to people (some of which dont even have more than a HS diploma)I'm talking over 100k to sit in an office and read papers and go for long walks or work out in the health clubs that are off limits to anyone BUT NASA personnel.

Your welcome Graham! BUT like the 7:13 poster said It WAS NOT NASA that did great things it was the contractor workforce that did ALL the great things in space and throughout all the NASA centers! Dont thank NASA thank Lockheed Martin, Boeing, EG&G, McDonnell Douglas just to name a few! All NASA did was provide a place for all these great companies to make great things happen!
