Three ISS astronauts prepare for return on Soyuz

A Russian Soyuz carrying a U.S. astronaut is scheduled to make its fiery descent back to Earth early Friday.

The spacecraft is set to close its hatch on the International Space Station at 6:20 p.m. today, undock at 9:35 p.m. and touch down in the desolate steppes of Kazakhastan about 12:55 a.m. Friday EDT.

Onboard will be Expedition 24 Commander Alexander Skvortsov and Flight Engineers Tracy Caldwell Dyson of NASA and Mikahil Kornienko of the Russian Space Agency.

The trio have been in space since April 2. They'll be leaving behind on the outpost:
NASA astronauts Doug Wheelock and Shannon Walker and Fyodor Yurchikhin of the Russian Space Agency.

Skvortsov formally handed command of the station over to Wheelock on Wednesday.
