Rather insensitive article, all things considered; I've been told that the soonest that anyone could be back on the job, IF the Senate bill is accepted by the House, and Signed by the President, is a years time, and that is only for Design work; my best wishes for the folks between the hammer and the anvil of this very public mess of NASA and The Politicians mismanagement of US Human Space Flight;
Maybe we lost the Space Race after all, and we're just finding out now.
RE: United Space Alliance Layoffs: Very Sad! For those of us that made it through this layoff, it will be tough, not just because we have to make up for the ones not here, but, it is sad to see people you have known for over 25 years being forced, through no fault of their own, out the door. I hope that all will be well, and this might be a blessing for them in the long run. Remember all, we will miss you, and, we will keep the torch lit for your return....Best of luck to all!!
I know that Mr. Peterson's intentions were good, but, not only is it obvious how they feel, it is in pretty poor taste to even ask! After all, we are all a team (JSC, KSC, MSFC, Goddard, etc.) that firmly believe in what we do, and why we do it. It is a very sad day not just for NASA, but for the USA. The very talented people that will no longer be on our teams, will find other positions...Maybe not right away, but, they will go on. And, they can say with pride that they were a part of the best! You will still remain in our hearts and souls. You are the team that helped us live the dream!!

How about that Hope and Change?
United Space Alliance is not the only contractor that is loosing a massive amount of people. Boeing is laying off in large amounts but not exceeding 500 at one time, so it's almost under the radar. There are also about 1000 subcontractors to USA that are being let got tomorrow.
It is with terrible sadness to write about the loss of SO MANY of the most brilliant, dedicated team players probably in the history of the country. I realize these people weren't fighting a war, but they sure as hell were making this nation proud. God Speed To All.
The other part of this story is that 90% of the people at KSC will be out of here by May 2011. The writing is on the wall and tide is moving even with the ridiculous NASA disaster of an 2011 appropriation bill.
My dad worked in the auto industry his entire career. Layoffs and plant closings were something we got used to over the years. But NASA? There will be so much talent and skilled people lost I'm really not sure what to say here. I can echo just about everything previous people have said. My heart is with you all. Good luck and Godspeed with moving on. Let's give someone the boot in 2012 and send his bunch back to where they came from. Thanks for all of your hard work and dedication. I hope someday my two year old son can have something to look foreward to as I did years ago.
Boeing is not the only one flying under the radar in force reductions. Since October 2009, ATK has laid off most of the SRM/SRB workforce, mainly in Utah, but also with impact here at KSC, they did it by laying off 450 at a time, less than than the 500 required to provide advance notice.
